VILLAGE Report vol.16 Toyama Prefecture | Takaoka Copperware, a Town That Began with 7 Metal Casters

Takaoka Copperware began in 1611 at a foundry opened by Maeda Toshinaga, the second lord of the Kaga Domain, who invited 7 metal casters to the area. From Buddhist altar fittings and tea utensils to large bronze statues and temple bells, its makers have produced a wide range of works, and in 1975 it was designated as one of Japan’s first Traditional Crafts.
