61.5% of People Age 80 Have 20 or More Teeth | Reiwa 6 Dental Disease Survey
Have you ever heard the term “8020”? It refers to the goal of keeping at least 20 of your own teeth even at age 80. We look at the progress toward this goal using the 2024 Survey of Dental Diseases published by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
8020 achievers reach 61.5%
In the 2024 survey, the percentage of people who had at least 20 teeth at age 80 (8020 achievers) was estimated at 61.5%. In the previous 2022 survey, the figure was 51.6%, meaning it has now exceeded 60%. The Survey of Dental Diseases has been conducted since 1957 to understand the condition of teeth and oral health in Japan.
63.8% had a dental checkup
The percentage of people who had a dental checkup or examination in the past year was 63.8%, up from 58.0% in the previous survey. By gender, the percentage was higher among women. Meanwhile, looking at gum condition, 47.8% of people had periodontal pockets of 4 mm or more.
2024 Survey of Dental Diseases (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare)

How to read the figures
Because this survey is conducted in selected districts, the figures may vary from year to year. Even so, the percentage of 8020 achievers has risen with each survey. For how to read what kinds of physical symptoms people in Japan are concerned about, see How to Read the Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions and for life expectancy figures, see 2025 Abridged Life Tables introduced here.
