The Tools Change, the Questions Do Not. | The Right Distance Between Technology and Everyday Life
New and convenient tools keep entering our lives, one after another. Smartphones, AI, and all kinds of services. Before we know it, they are helping us in many parts of everyday life. Becoming more convenient is a welcome thing. And yet, there are moments when we sometimes want to stop and wonder, “Is this really enough?”
Tools change at an astonishing speed. Things we could hardly imagine a few years ago have now become ordinary. How should we face this change?
We at Value Village neither fear technology nor worship it. What we value is one simple question that does not change, even when the tools do. Today, we would like to think about that together with you.
How should we relate to technology?
For us, technology is “a tool that gently amplifies trust between people.” It can help watch over our health. It can create good encounters. It can take on tedious tasks. These are all things to be grateful for. But tools are, after all, only means. Rather than keeping them at a distance out of fear or worshipping them and relying on them completely, we hope to relate to them at just the right distance, as allies that help make everyday life better organized.
Does convenience make us happy?
Becoming more convenient and becoming happier may seem similar, but they are a little different. Even if time is freed up, if we fill that time with hurry, our hearts become even busier. What matters is how we use the space that convenience creates. For time spent laughing with people we care about. For nights when we can sleep slowly. For the quiet of taking a breath. Convenience turns into richness only when it is used for these “things only people can do.”
What is the unchanging “question”?
No matter what new inventions are born, there is one question we will not let go of. It is: “Does this lead to human happiness?” It is not whether the tool is convenient, but whether using it helps life feel more in order and the heart feel softer. As long as we hold on to this question, no matter how much technology changes, we will not lose sight of the direction we should take. Tools change. But the question does not.
What matters when welcoming technology into our lives?
When bringing in a new tool, instead of asking because “everyone is using it,” try gently asking yourself, “Will this truly bring my life into balance?” Choosing matters more than adding. Only what is truly necessary, neither too much nor too little. A tool welcomed in that way will fit naturally into your everyday life. The main character is always your life, not the tool.
Tools will continue to change. Even so, smiling at someone, standing beside someone, believing in someone. The value of things only people can do will never change. In this changing era, we hope to be a partner that continues to hold the unchanging question together with you.
