Someday, a Town of Our Own. | A Community Vision Centered on Health, Born from Everyday Life
In the morning, you casually exchange greetings with someone you pass on the street. In the evening, you walk by a park where you can hear children’s voices. When you are in trouble, there is someone whose face you know. Do you ever feel a little nostalgic for such a way of life?
Life should have become more convenient, yet somehow it feels just a little lonely. We should be connected, yet suddenly we feel alone. Perhaps that feeling is not yours alone.
There is a landscape that Value Village has long held in its heart. It is “one community centered on health.” Today, please allow us to share just a little about this dream, which is still at the concept stage.
What does it mean to “create a town”?
The “town” we dream of is not a collection of buildings or shops. It is a community where people can call each other by name, where there are eyes watching over children, and where neighbors can be relied on in times of need. There is a reason we deliberately chose the word Village, rather than City or Town. What we want to create is not large scale, but the warmth of connection. Even if it is small, it is a place where hearts truly meet.
Why nurture “culture” before buildings?
Buildings can be built if there is money. But trust between people cannot be bought with money. Keeping daily promises and continuing to be honest. Only that steady accumulation gradually becomes culture. That is why we value the order of things. First, people who share the same values gather. Trust grows. Smiles increase. Beyond that, a town naturally begins to emerge. Not in a hurry, but surely. That is what we believe.
What is a community for?
Loneliness may be one of the deepest concerns for us living today. That is why the Value Village community hopes to be not a place to buy something, but a place to gather, learn, and laugh. Through beauty and health as an entry point, someone who visited alone leaves together with companions. If such a scene is born, that is already the beginning of a small Village. We hope to gently stand beside people not through products, but in the form of connection. That is our wish.
What does a day in a “health-centered town” look like?
Imagine this. In the morning, you exchange greetings with neighbors, enjoy a pleasant meal, move your body, learn, work, laugh, and sleep peacefully at night. Rather than trying to get back in shape only after something feels wrong, healthy everyday living itself is woven into the life of the town. A beauty salon becomes an entrance to health, a dining hall becomes a place of learning, and a park becomes a classroom where people gather. There is nothing especially extraordinary about it. Daily life is simply, gently in balance. That is the scene we envision.
When will that town be created?
To be honest, a “health-centered town” is still a vision at the concept stage. There is no specific plan yet for when or where it will take shape. But every town began first in someone’s imagination. One shop today, one community today, and one small habit by which you bring balance to your life today. We believe each of these is the first block of a town of the future.
What kind of place is a town where you can live with peace of mind? The answer surely lies not in a grand plan, but in the small details of everyday life. Value Village will continue to stay quietly by your side in that daily life. We picture the day when, someday, we can smile together with you in one town.
