According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications’ Family Income and Expenditure Survey, food spending by households of two or more people in 2025 was 94,895 yen per month, up 5.5% in nominal terms and down 1.2% in real terms. Price increases for rice and chocolate pushed cereals and confectionery down in real terms, while dining out rose 1.8% in real terms.
